10 Things You May Not Know About Your Dog

Think you know all about your dog? Well here are 10 things you may not know.

  1. Smell. Well all know a dog has a good sense of smell, but your dog has 125-300 million scent glands, while a human has just 5 million. It's no wonder they can smell that cookie you're trying to eat quietly in your bedroom.
  2. They can smell your feelings. We all know that a dog seems to sense when something is wrong, and that's because they can. They can detect subtle changes in your smell, so if you sweat when you're nervous or afraid, they will pick that up.
  3. They are more mature. It's hard to believe, but that one year old puppy that likes playing all the time, is as physically mature as your 15 year old child.
  4. Beware dog bites. Everyone knows this, but did you know that a dog's mouth can exert up to a massive 320 pounds of pressure. That's almost 3 times as much as a human bite. Add to that the fact that they have 42 teeth, as opposed to a human with 32, it's no wonder that we all try to avoid upsetting our dog.
  5. A dog's sweat glands are in its paws. In hot weather dogs will pant as a way to cool down because they can only sweat through their feet. This is one reason they enjoy a good paddle on a hot day and cooling their feet can go a long way towards cooling them down. And while it might look like their panting takes a lot of effort, a dog can take 300-400 breaths a minute with very little effort.
  6. Dogs have a sense of time. When you get home, your dog always makes you feel welcome, because they really have missed you. A dog can sense time, which is why they always know when it's time to eat and time for a walk.
  7. How many times have you seen your dog wriggling in its sleep? This is because they really do dream. In fact dogs and humans have similar sleep patterns and dogs do enjoy dreaming during REM sleep.
  8. Some people think dogs are carnivorous, but they are in fact omnivorous. This means they have to have a varied diet, but don't think you can feed them anything.
  9. It's not true that dogs are colour blind. They can see colour, it's just a little duller than we see it.
  10. Dogs may give you a paw print instead of a fingerprint, but their nose will have an individual pattern. This pattern can be used to identify a dog, just like a fingerprint.
