7 Dog Training Tips For Beginners

So you are a newly-made owner of a dog. Maybe it is a funny curly purebred puppy or a serious elderly dog from a shelter, but you definitely love your cuddlebug to bits. If you read this article it means you have probably decided to get up you neck in dog training. Here are some tips for canine devotees.

№ 1: Read Literature

Anyone willing to get into the nuts and bolts should be theoretically savvy so you are welcome to get acquainted with the range of modern and classics literature on cynology researches. Basic knowledge of conditioned and unconditioned stimuli, calming signals and reinforcement will come in very handy.

№ 2: Learn The Signals From Your Dog

Most of the calming signals are universal, but you shouldn’t forget about the individuality of your dog. He or she may show you the unease in unusual way, e.g., by scratching or closing eyes. Check every change in behavior in different situation and soon you’ll be able to read your dog's mind like an open book.


№ 3: Learn What Reward Your Dog Likes Most

Your dog may be gone on anything: food or dog toys, or swimming in a pool, or even running! Everything the dog likes may serve as a reward. Treats can be various, from a cuke piece to odorant rumen. The same situation with the toys: disks, balls, ropes, kongs etc. Try to find what drives your dog crazy.

№ 4: Define The Canine Sports Field

It should be something that both you and your dog will get into the spirit from. Obedience training, agility, pitch and go, flyball, tracking etc. You can also become a part of a voluntary search and rescue dog team if you like. Many dogs are gladly engaged in several canine sports, you just have to suggest them to him(her).

№ 5: Choose A Good Dog Trainer

Theoretical knowledge is great, but you also should understand how to apply it in practice. Thus you may need to ask a dog trainer for help. Don’t hesitate to question your instructor if you don’t understand the canine issues. And, to be successful, follow all the trainer’s directions and always do the “homework”.

№ 6: Set The Goal

It doesn’t have to be like “winning in international competitions”; it can be just for the sake of spending good time with your pet. But the specificity and determinacy of your goals will change your training plan in some way or another.

№ 7:  Keep It Up!

We all have ups and downs in our lives – your dog has them too, so don’t be too strict to your beloved pet. And this is entirely your responsibility for it – it’s you who should explain properly, choose right timing for reinforcement and make every allowance. Never give up. Take a deep breath and start again.

First of all, love your dog, don’t offend your canine friend and remember: training is for the building of a bond between the two of you, not for soothing human's vanity.
