Spotting And Preventing Worms

Good dog health depends a lot on your ability to recognise symptoms of illness and act accordingly. One common, and unpleasant, condition that your dog can suffer is worms. If left they can do a lot of damage to your dog, and in some cases can cause death.

Some worms naturally live in dogs, and as long as the dog's is healthy, there is no reason for them to be infected. These worms can harm unborn puppies, though, so you should take extra care if your dog is pregnant

Symptoms of worms

One of the most unpleasant symptoms is seeing the worms. If you do get your dog to the vet as soon as you can.

Other symptoms can include:

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting and / or diarrhoea
  • Loss of appetite and weight
  • Distended tummy, particularly in puppies.
  • A dry scruffy coat
  • A cough.

Treatment

If you think your dog has worms, don't try to treat it yourself. There are several different types or worm, and they need the right treatment to clear them. Take them to the vet so that they can be properly tested and given the right medication. If you try to treat it yourself, you could make matters worse.

Prevention

  • Good hygiene can help prevent some worms. Regularly disinfect their food and water bowls, with pet disinfectant, and keep the garden clear of their poop.
  • Fleas can carry worms, so regular flea treatment can help.
  • Don't feed them raw meat. This can not only encourage worms, but can cause other dog health problems too.
  • Watch your dog when out walking in places where other animals have been. They may decide to eat the wrong thing.

Your vet can also help you work out a regular programme of medication and checkups which can prevent worms, so it's always worth discussing this. Sometimes there are no symptoms, so if you follow a preventative treatment plan, you know your dog is well protected.
