Tips To Encourage Dogs And Cats To Live Together

We all know the phrase to fight like cat and dog, but for some, it's a real issue. Introducing a cat in to a home where there's a dog, or a dog in to a home where there's a cat, can cause problems. Here are some tips to try to get them to live peacefully together.

  1. If you can, try to get a dog who is used to living with a cat, and vice versa. If they are already comfortable living with a cat, you will have less problems getting them to accept each other.
  2. Use a baby gate or something similar to block off an area of the house. This will keep the dog in one place and the cat can come and go as they please. If they are uncomfortable with the dog, they can get through the baby gate - where you dog can't. Moving the bed, food bowl and water to the 'safe' area will allow the cat to settle in their own time.
  3. Another good use of the baby gate, is if the dog tries to chase the cat. The cat can escape to safety. If this happens try to keep a leash on the dog so if you see them go to chase, you can stop them and discourage them.
  4. Using a leash will also allow you to tether the dog in a position where they can watch the cat. If they watch and don't give chase, reward them with a treat.
  5. If you bring a puppy home and you have a cat, watch them when they try to play. Puppies are more playful and their playfulness may not be appreciated by the cat.
  6. You can't expect your dog to behave perfectly if the cat doesn't, so if the cat decides to torment your dog, allowing them to chase them away is a good way for the cat to learn too, as long as the dog doesn't make a habit of it.
  7. Don't try to force them together. They will take their own time to get to know one another. Sometimes they will simply tolerate each other and just learn to keep out of the way, and other times they will end up the best of friends. There is nothing you can do to force them to be friends, exactly the same way you can't force humans to be friends.
